Having just watched the series on DVD brings back all the wonderful memories from watching the original series when it was first aired on the beeb.
It's also great to see how the world was then, and intresting to see how it has changed so much.
It would be great if Michael could do it again. |

BBC needs to release this in region 1, dammit!
waaaah, sob, wail....
I haven't seen 80 Days in its since it first came out.. when the hell was that anyway? 1988? 1989? Anyway, it's been too long...
I just have two worn out episodes on video tape (that some shyster on amazon charged me too damn much for)
ooh, Helen's cussing a lot today....
I just love 80 days and I want it NOW.
That's all. |

The BBC should definitely release the DVD collection in America.
It’s only fair then!

Calm down! I know how you feel, though. My VHS of Pole to Pole is virtually devoid of color is places. Always was. The label says "BBC", but it's just a plain Avery style label. Hmmmmm!!.... I forget who I bought it from, but obviously it wasn't an authorized publisher.
Moral: Never scrimp on eye glasses or Palin's Travel videos! |

Should be no problem, Helen. Most DVD players now (even the cheapest of the cheap) come with multi region capacity. Or,they come with instructions of how to switch off the machines region "judge" in the official manual. The days of being restricted by regions, are over. For example, i recently ordered and recieved the Life of Brian Criterion Edition of Life of Brian from the states. It's never been released on Region 2 (Europe). But it doesn't matter. I can play it at home here and also on the PC.

This is my first post, so I should introduce myself. My name is Mike Johnson and I am the Senior Studio Engineer for South Dakota Public Television in the United States. I am the engineer in charge of the studio and master control facilities in Vermillion, South Dakota.
You folks in the UK have it a lot easier when it comes to code free DVD players. The US is still very much enforcing Region Protection. Plus our TV's won't display PAL video so even if the player is code free, you still need a PAL to NTSC converter. (I understand that many newer UK TV's will display NTSC.)
But the problem isn't that hard to solve, especially if you can afford to purchase a new DVD player. When the DVD box set was announced in November (?) and there was no sign it would ever be offered in the US, I decided to take the plunge and order the DVD set from Amazon.co.uk and find a new code-free DVD player. I needed a new player anyway.
I discovered that some of the newer (and more expensive) players have built-in PAL-to-NTSC and NTSC-to-PAL conversion and can be programmed (not modified) to ignore region coding. These are the ones that are being sold outside the US right now. There are a few companies in the US that specialize in getting these players imported to the US. One that was recommended to me is http://www.world-import.com. Peter at World Import recommended the Yamaha DVD-S550 as having the best picture quality. The cost is around $200. I purchased one and it works great. I am completely happy with it.
The DVD set from Amazon cost me about $110 delivered. For a 16 DVD set I felt that was a very reasonable price - especially for Michael Palin which I can't buy in the US. So for Helen, why wait? If you can afford a new DVD player, get a code-free one with PAL-to-NTSC conversion and get that boxed DVD set!
Or can I interest you in some slightly used VHS tapes now that I don't need mine anymore?
Thanks and I'm glad to be here!
Mike J

I need a bigger boat and they should just
WELEASE WEGION ONE! WAAAH!
:)
(but hell yes, I am saving my pennies to get a multi region player and the series, so this tantrum is really all for show)(cuz who knows, like Mike said, when or if they will release the series in the US)
and welcome, Mike!
and what a relief the silliness of region specific DVD players are a thing of the past. it was just silly silly silly. |

Thank god. Becuase usually the best editions of DVD's are issued on Region 1 (from what i've seen). Often we get Region 2 editions of some films without the commentarys and extras etc that are on the Region 1 edition (Life of Brian is an example). Our edition of it here is naff, so i payed out for th region 1 criterion edition. This is not always the case though (as the Palin DVD's are proving to be hard to get for people outside the UK). Interesting what you say about the U.S enforcing the region coding more though.

| Yes, I've always been a little puzzled by the lack of universality. Sounds like the VHS vs. Beta system controversy 25 years ago. Maybe this is revenge for us having to accept the 4'9" as the standard railroad gauge... Well, the British did make better steam engines.... |
