California by Loretto on 9 July 2012 2:17am

Well, we've known this for a few weeks but I am dying to share it. Sean's water polo team will be playing in the Junior Olympics in California at the end of July and beginning of August, so we're going!

I have never been to the west coast so I am really looking forward to it. We will visit San Jose, San Francisco (Alcatraz is definite!) and do a day in Napa as well.

Good for Sean ! My sisters said that visiting Alcatraz was really interesting. Enjoy your trip and I hope Sean's team does well.

Cool. Good luck Sean! Where in California is the competition?

The competition is in San Jose and we will spend time afterwards in San Francisco. As you porbably knowMike, water polo is not a huge sport here in the eastern US. His team didn't do well all season but because there are so few teams here they are going. There is a team from New York called Navy, holy Christ they are like on steroids or something. Some of them have full beards already!!!

Mike you'll be interested in this. A group of wealthy people got together and built Chelsea Piers in Stamford. That is where Sean's WP team practices. It is a fantastic idea, keep kids fit, keep them off the streets and out of trouble, keep them in sports.

Stayed a couple of nights in San Francisco a few years ago and LOVED IT, especially Pier 39 Fisherman's Wharf and the cable cars!!

And the aging hippy in me couldn't quite believe I was in the city I longed to live in during the late 1960s!!

My eldest brother loves San Francisco and although he lives in Australia, he's visited it often.

A few years ago he met my fellow Scot, Billy Connolly, in the street and had a chat with him.

Hi guys. We arrived last night in San Jose at around 9:30 pm local time, but in east coast time it was 12:30. By the time we had sorted rental car, hotel it was almost 3am when we fell asleep.

There's a very Spanish feel here, and after the 6 hour flight I told Kevin I feel like we are not in the US anymore.

The hotel we are staying at in San Jose is called the Pruneyard!!! I think that's a funny name, but what do I know? It must be my juvenile sense of humor! The water polo team arrives later tonight, so they chose the hotel, probably because of the free breakfasts! You should see those water polo players eat. Savages!!!!

We are off to San Fran and Alcatraz later and will do some sight seeing around the city too. I will take some pics and post them to flicker later.

America is a massive country, where we live is definitely deserving of the name New England, and it is like a different country.

Ok, have a great day y'all!
