How difficult is it for Americans to move to the UK? by Noell on 19 September 2005 9:50pm

A friend of mine has been trying to convince me to move with her to London. I'm aware of the strict laws regarding work visas and obtaining them in England, and most of Europe in general.
Is it really as difficult as everyone says? Technically, it's illegal for an American to search for jobs in England on a tourist visa, but does anyone here have experience themselves, or know anyone who has successfully moved from America to the UK (who does not have a spouse or relative already there)??

Im not sure myself. I can get grandparent entry and work in the uk for up to four years without limitations on the amount I work. I think otherwise you can get a working visa for 2 years and you can then work for up to 12 mths. I wouldnt if you're serious about migrating jeopardise your chances by false pretences. They wouldnt allow it in America, so why would England be any different. Also once you have got a job, they may declare you invaluable and sponsor you.....

Hi Noelle,
Do you want to move to London? You live in Alabama now, am I correct?
When I was younger, I think I would have enjoyed living in London. Now, I am not fond of the cold. I have become accustomed to my dry heat in the desert. I have become a real wuss and see 60 degrees as cool.
One day, I was on the phone with my father (he lives in New York). I was complaining that it was 43 degrees out and I was freezing. At first, he thought I was pulling his leg. When he realized I was serious, he was furious.

Last time I was in London was November, 1991.

Don't get me wrong, Noelle, I am not belittling you if you want to do this. I didn't want you to take it that way. I was just curious (nosy) that's all.
Mike

Well, first of all, Noell, you have to get over the language barrier. :^)

I have never been sure how our immigration laws affect US citizens, however, there are plenty of Americans working and living in London. I would suggest that you contact the UK embassy in the US for clarification as I think there are moves to change our existing immigration laws.
Should you decide to move here, I would be happy to help if I can. Linz.

Thanks for the (mostly) helpful responses!
Yes, I currently live in Alabama, but have visited London twice. One of these visits was for over 2 months, and I grew to love London more than any other place I've been, including New York. I've travelled quite a bit through Europe and the U.S., and would love to move to London if I didn't have to break the law to look for a job there.
I know that you can't legally job-hunt on a tourist visa, and the odds of finding a company to sponsor your stay aren't great if you aren't European. This doesn't stop most people from trying, but I was wondering how strictly those laws are actually enforced.
I also know that certain jobs, like clerical work, being a nanny, and working at a pub, don't qualify for a work visa. AND if you haven't departed the country by the time your tourist visa is up, you will be deported and not allowed entry back into Great Britain again.
This move wouldn't take place for at least a year, so I would have a good bit of time to plan.
Thank you so much for your kind offer, Linz - knowing a few Brits before moving would be a huge load off my mind.
