Nyamgiri Hills by alisonjanehealy on 5 July 2010 5:42pm

Just wondering if anybody knows if there are any bodies such as Greenpeace, WWF or Avaaz campaigning on the destruction of a way of life in the Nyamgiri Hills? These bodies have benefited from the social networking sites, I believe. It would be a great way to start something if not aleady in play..

These are the same hills that Michael writes about in his latest message.

Near where I live Shell and Exxon have installed a large LNG processing plant and the pipelines run all the way from the North Sea rigs to Aberdeen then across land to Mossmorran in Fife. From there they go to a jetty in the Forth River estuary. The plant and the pipelines have been so well installed that the effect on the environment has been minimised and the plant is set into a natural depression in the ground such that from most places around it can't be seen.

If the bauxite mining is to go ahead then perhaps some form of reinstatement of the landscape afterwards would ensure the local tribes are left with useful land to continue their existence.

Ken, that sounds good, provided they did reinstate the landscape. However, what happens to the people, in the interim?

Earlier I found the following http://www.survivalinternational.org/news/6165 and hope that the outcome is a positive one.

Thank you Michael. Now, because of you more people (of which I am one) are aware of the plight facing the people in the Nyamgiri Hills.
