Marhaba from a Sheffielder in Dubai by SmedleyofSheffield on 14 February 2010 2:17pm

Hello.

I'm new to the website, although obviously not new to Michael Palin. I have been a huge fan of pretty much everything I knew MP did, as well as being proud of the Sheffield connection (even if he can't choose the right football team).

Having read both sets of diaries so far, I have to say I find them moving, inspiring and amongst my favourite books of all time (loved Kenneth Williams' diaries, too).

I found as I reached the end of both chapters that I grew anxious that the books were almost over. Obviously reading about the ailing health of Michael's mother, the terrible loss of his sister and, as I sit here with two adopted desert moggies, the passing of Denis, saddened me greatly. Last night I realised that the current volume only went as far as 1988, I was distraught, figuring I had another two years to go!

I don't know if Michael reads this site, in fact I very much doubt that he does, but in the slim chance that he does see this, I'd like him to know that I was sat on the loo when I read the last entry just now and, due to the size of the index and the number of pages remaining, didn't see it coming. When it hit home, I let out an audible "Noooo!"

The wife must think I'm nuts.

Anyway Michael, just wanted to pass along my thanks, mainly for diaries but also for the decades of entertainment you've given me and my family. If you ever pass through Dubai for that Oman trip you've been promising yourself, we'd love to get you on our radio show in Dubai for a chat. Maybe even take an abra past the dhows on the creek before they disappear altogether.

Regards -

Welcome to Palins Travels!

I hope you will enjoy the diversity of this site, don't forget you can read through various interesting personalised Travel-linked messages from Michael Palin himself,in the respective section.
It's good you are already well conversant with the doings of MP. Yes indeed,he is also a proud "Sheffielder",as you call it,like your good self.

It's interesting that you say you have a radio show,or your own radio show in Dubai:what's it called?
Talking of football teams,I read that Chelsea Captain John Terry's wife,Toni Terry recently sought sanctuary in Dubai after the recent bust-up.
Media honcho Piers Morgan also devoted one of his recent travel feature progs to Dubai. And also it now has one of the tallest towers in the world.

Regards to you,my Palin friend,bIG BLOGGER.

Funnily enough, i was (against my better judgement) in the Piers Morgan documentary. We interviewed him on the show (our station is Dubai 92 - http://www.dubai92.om - My wife and I do the breakfast show) and we were filmed for hours but most of it got the chop due to restrictions on what we were and weren't allowed to mention about Dubai.

I keep seeing the Terry "family snaps" on the Daily Mail website. Considering Dubai doesn't allow paparazzi, I assume they're all via a PR agency. Ho hum.

I've been sat here at a bit of a loss since finishing the book. Going to talk about it on tomorrow's show. Is there a 90s diary in the pipeline?

Welcome to Palin's Travels Simon ( Catboy )

You are far too modest, so I provided a direct link to your bio.

Welcome to the site, Simon

My husband and I spent a couple of nights in Dubai a few years ago (at the Jebel Ali), after spending a month travelling Nepal, India and the Maldives.

We were very impressed with Dubai. We were perhaps a little jaded after our trip (though it has to be said that we didn't exactly rough it!!) but the sights and sounds of Dubai really perked us up.

The highlight of our (only too brief) visit was, for me at least, a dune bashing trip into the desert followed by a bbq. Ok - a tourist thing I know, and I DID feel terribly car sick, but fun nevertheless.

We DID listen to the radio in our hire car but I can't remember which station it was, only that it was in English. (Sorry!)

My son and his wife spent part of their honeymoon there, and one of the highlights for them was taking afternoon tea at the Burj Al Arab - both had birthdays whilst away and they spent their birthday money on it!!

They also visited the Palm Islands (the aquarium I think they said and also swimming). This wasn't built when we visited.

Soooo, enjoy the site !!

Anne, Stafford, UK

P.S. We have very very good friends who live in P-e-n-i-stone (I have to do it like that or the site will censor it, believe it or not!), which as you know is very near Sheffield.

Now I wonder why Simon Smedley--Dubai Radio Breakfast Show DJ--decided to take the nickname "catboy"? (mmm, the mind boggles...)

At least we now have somebody "famous" on Palins Travels, that is,besides Michael himself!
(...and no disrespect to you,JTM.)

Welcome, Simon! How long have you lived in Dubai?

Hello Sue... Been in Dubai four and a half years. If you'll aprdon the cliché, it's been a rollercoaster.

BigBlogger... I was in a terrible band called 'Catboy' and the name stuck.

Anne... Thanks for the warm welcome. I have never done the 4x4 Safari but often take my big, silly car into the desert and camp. There are some photos here...

My wife and I had a night in the Burj as a surprise from our wedding guests (we had a small wedding in Dubai). It's a real one-off. I dived in the Lost Chambers aquarium before it opened to the public (perk of the job) and was headbutted by a shark. Since then we've done quite a bit of diving in Sri Lanka and on the Oman coast. It's beautiful over there. There have even been whale sharks recently.

Again, thank you to everyone for the messages. Sorry I didn't check back in sooner. Been very busy!

Regards -

Simon
