Malta by suzulu on 18 October 2016 3:19pm

I returned last Monday from a week in Malta. I haven't been there before so didn't really know what to expect.

We stayed in Valletta, the capital, in a hotel near the Grand Harbour. Not knowing much about Malta except what happened during World War II, it was interesting to find that it has so much history. I didn't realise it was ruled by the Knights (although Michael does mention the Knights of St. John in his Pole to Pole but I had forgotten). One of the many places we visited was the Casa Rocca Piccola, a 16th century palace belonging to a Maltese noble family (the 9th Marquis de Pino who still lives there with his English wife). Most of the rooms are open to the public and we were lucky to be shown around by the Marquis himself who was very interesting with a good sense of humour. From the outside it looked very small, being in a small narrow street but it was like the Tardis inside with spacious rooms and a small but beautiful garden.

So much to see in Valletta. Outside Valletta, of course we visited some of the touristy places like the Blue Grotto, Mdina and Marsaxlokk with its colourful typical Maltese boats and had a lovely boat trip around the harbours.

The people were very friendly and helpful and the food and wine in the restaurants were good.

Got bitten by mosquitoes but didn't think there were any as didn't see any the first two days (so didn't bother with the insect repellent)!
