Re: NEW EUROPE - WHAT A LET DOWN!!! by Palin's Passepartout on 18 October 2009 12:27pm

Hello everyone. I've just registered on Palin's Travels. Nice to be involved! For someone who doesn't go abroad, Michael's travel programmes and books have opened my eyes to how the other half of the world lives from the comfort of my own living room! But I have to agree with some of you on the comments made about the 'New Europe' series. It is my least favourite of all. But I think maybe because of the seriousness of most of the subjects involved,(after all, loads of bad things had happened in those parts of Europe in the past),it would probably have been inapropriate to inject too much humour. But humour is definately what it lacked. I think sometimes we expect too much of Michael! I think he does well to do all that traveling anyway! I don't think I'd have the stamina! Nice to be communicating. More soon!

Personally I thought it was a terrific piece of TV. Very relevant with the new European countries, a part of the world that most of us new very little about and Iím sure it has inspired many to get out there and visit this intriguing region for themselves. I can say that as I am certainly one of them!

Another terrific series Michael.

Into episode 2 of New Europe. The hubby seems more into this series again. Even watched it in preference to Superbowl! The island off Croatia was beautiful. It is very educational, and makes ya think how life has changed for many new Europeans since the early 1990s. I thought what he said about Turkey was very interesting and true, anyone I have spoken to about the EEC and Turkey seems to fear the combination, because it will be the biggest country in Community.

I have always been a staunch admirer of Mr Palin and his series. I was ,however, disappointed at the blatant but unexplained continuity lapse in the journey from Bulgaria (mid-summer) to Turkey (midwinter). I appreciate that he does have a home to go to but an explanation of the time lag would have been appreciated. Continuty issues would only apply if this transition had been nearly seamless...it was anything but.

It didn't bother me at all. I just wish he'd return to talking to the everyday man in the street about stuff, not politicians and clothing designers....but that's just a little gripe from a little old Irish woman in CT all the way across the sea in the USA. Excuse me now I have to put me teeth in.

I've got no complaints about any of Michael's series. New Europe may not be the best he's ever done but it was a difficult undertaking. Bear in mind, he's making a TV programme and his aim is to entertain us and hopefully educate us who will never travel as widely as him.

Yes I enjoyed it, as I have ALL the series.

If I have to choose, though, AWI80D would have to be my favourite as it was not only the first, but it also had an air of excitement (will they do it in 80 days?).

I agree Anne. The world was a different place then and watching 80 days was a pleasure with each episode ending with you wondering if he'll make the next leg.......and no TV spoilers in the press to tell you.
