Brazil- what is your opinion? by pjsalda on 25 October 2012 5:53am

Let's see what is your reaction to the new series.

On this fist episode, I did not like it as other series. It misses that sense of adventure including a goal for a mission, like previous journies (Pole to Pole, around the world in 80 days). I miss this. He was only hoping around locations in the country.

But he continues to be Michael and that sensation is still present.

So what is your opinion?

I agree with you that the sense of adventure has been lost - but then it was not really there for any of the series after ATWI80D in my opinion, if you mean having the clock ticking. I miss that 'will he get there in time?' aspect.

Of course other series have had their adventures, the difficulties of getting from place to place and (another thing I miss) - the fact that he is literally going from one place to another in otder to get HOME (not going backwards and forwards to home, if you see what I mean).

Having said all that, I really enjoyed the first episode. It was informative, pleasing on the eye, and funny - both Zak and I laughed out loud at several bits, including a slightly sozzled Michael !

All in all, thumbs up from me!!

:)

I haven't seen it of course, it is not on tv here in the US, but I was curious to see what the Guardian said about it. John Crace's review is far from flattering. And some of the comments following the article are also uncomplimentary, and prejudicial.

If the formula for a winning series is an Englishman goes abroad, is kind of out of place among the natives, in a comical way, but remains polite and respectful, why would you change that formula?

I tell you, you have to be very thick skinned to read some of those comments. Lots of armchair critics out there, and Crace seems to be one of them.

You know what? I'm pasting this into the Guardian's comments section.

Here's what I wrote:
"If the formula for a winning series is an Englishman goes abroad, is kind of out of place among the natives, in a comical way, but remains polite and respectful, why would you change that formula?

Palin, now 69, deserves to take things easy. In fact he could probably sit back and do nothing for the rest of his life. But the man obviously prefers to remain active. I do not see his travels, or him, as being a condescending English man abroad. They allow us to see places that we'll will probably never see.

Fair dues to him for not sitting back and watching the rest of the world go by."

loretto am I reading you right that Michael Palin was called condisending ? I disagree with that "journalist" then . I don;t think he was always comfortable (the radio interview question on gay marriage was a good example) but i don;t recall seeing any condisention at all . the show was very interesting and introduced me to the north east of a country i know nothing about . that , i think , is the reason these programmes are made .

don;t get upset by the people leaving comments . to me it is like the comment section on you tube . the contributors are very brave behind their keyboards same with critics incidentally !

I enjoyed the first episode. It was informative, entertaining and my wife and I laughed at several parts.
It isn't supposed to be highbrow, it's a lighthearted travelogue.

I would really hate to have stuff like that rot said about me. I know that people in the public eye are open to this kind of stuff, but they're only human too and sometimes these journalists want to create a stir. Crace is entitled to his opinion of course, but it could have done with a more open minded view of Palin's brand of travelogue.

Hi all

Haven't written here for a few years now, so nice to see some of the familar names still around.

Watched MP's Brazil last night on the Beeb and I loved it. I have to accept that any of his stuff now is not going to match the earlier series, even if only that he can't have the same energy as before. I guess that also the glory days of thought (and money) has long gone from the BBC of this type of programme, but I will definitely watch the rest of the series.

Christmas is not that far away which is the traditional time for me to get out the box set and watch every series as well.

Hope all of you and yours are doing good; is it just me or are the message boards all a bit serious these days?

Rgds

I really enjoyed the cultural aspect of the first episode and except for the night time scenes it was all filmed in brilliant sunshine which enhanced the colourful way of life of the Brazilians.

I very much enjoyed it, very informative and colourful. I especially enjoyed the music and dancing. Michael looked as if he was really enjoying it, especially playing the drums!

Guardian critic said it’s not good enough; not because Brazil isn’t exciting, not because “he is sixty-nine after all”; this episode revealed less than expected, unlike all other series of Mr. Palin’s. It is more like guided tours with “a knowledgeable local guide who had appeared from nowhere” who must have been sent for by "dogsbodies".
I worked with a guy from Brazil for about two years and all he ever said about his country was beach and bikinis. I guess that’s what is typical for Brazil. And safety issue is certainly one according to this review, anyhow, crime isn’t the first thing I want to learn about this country. I do want to see the beautiful side and the typical “Sun, beach and samba”. I look forward to the upcoming episodes of Brazil. As for his picks, I find in this episode historic locations informative and picturesque locations enjoyable.
