Day 208: Iquitos
At its full speed of six knots, the El Arca could have made the 300 miles between Iquitos and the Colombian border meet in under forty-eight hours, but the price we have paid for hitching a ride is that we have become part of a tour. It is a small and exclusive tour - an Indian family now living in San Francisco, two Australians in late middle age, an English couple, two single American women - but it is a tour all the same, and it will not be hurried.
This evening we have an introductory address from our resident naturalist, Daniel. He is small, dour, passionate about his country, the river, the rain forest and, you guessed it, bio-diversity. After almost half an hour of dazzling us with his knowledge and his vision he asks for questions.
One of the American ladies put up her hand straight away. 'There's a good two inches of water in my shower that I can't get to drain.'
