Cuzco. Inca walls.
Michael Palin - Full Circle'They are the Spaniards. The parading of the statues was an Inca tradition which the Spaniards took over. So this was a way for the natives to make a subtle answer to the domination.'

Does this Inca spirit of protest have any relevance today?

My companion has no doubt.

'Oh yes. It is very strong. It is the spirit of Peru.'

As I am writing up these notes, six months later, news is coming in of three hundred people held hostage in Lima by a group calling themselves the Tupac Amaru Revolutionary Movement, after the name of the last Inca king, who was beheaded by the Spanish and his head stuck on a pole.
