Around the World in 80 Days

Day 71: 4 December

Michael Palin - Around the World in 80 DaysWake up to feel us moving, but only just. Certainly not out on the high seas where we should be. It's now seven o'clock and we are moving gingerly out along a maze of wharves and into Newark Bay. Dress quickly and go straight up onto the bridge to catch a last look at New York on this brilliant morning. It's cold but clear and there is a magnificent panoramic view from New Jersey to Manhattan and Long Island beyond. The captain says that when he arrived from Charleston yesterday he could see the New York skyline from 50 miles away. The Statue of Liberty slides by, looking greener and sexier since her restoration, and so spellbinding is the view that no one goes down for breakfast until we have passed beneath the Verrazano Narrows Bridge, the East Coast's Golden Gate, and the pilot has been dropped at the Ambrose lighthouse. From here there are three traffic separation zones funnelling ships out of the crowded New York area. On the chart they point off like the arms of a country signpost. We turn north and east for Nantucket. The journey repeats itself neatly when I hear the captain's instructions.

'Frem . . . Fuld.'
