Around the World in 80 Days
Day 64: 27 November
My face, with dreadful permed hair, stares out at me from the top of the television on a card advertising A Fish Called Wanda as one of the four in-house movie hits. As it's currently taken 55 million dollars in the States I resolve to shut up about the Americans and their taste. At least they saved the Queen Mary and enabled me now to relax in a heavy enamel bath the length of a sentry box with a choice of four fillings: 'Freshwater Hot', 'Freshwater Cold', 'Sea Water Hot' and 'Sea Water Cold', and a shower control which marks Tepid.A short walk up on deck. The Art-Deco fittings of the interior, the inlaid wood and cut glass, the classical bas-relief figures in bronze and the murals of England in the thirties are superb. On deck, I find I've been pursued from Shanghai by Noel Coward, whose life-size photographic likeness graces the wide teak floor that he himself once graced, along with other swingers of the thirties and forties such as Fred Astaire, Spencer Tracy, Winston Churchill and Marlene Dietrich.
