Pole to Pole
Day 16: Tromsų to Hammerfest
The weather has changed. The clouds are low and grey, and Tromsų has shed its Mediterranean glow and taken on the aspect of northern Scotland. To cheer ourselves up we visit the Arctic Museum. This is a mistake. All it does is remind us how lucky we are to have lived this long. Polar life offers few comforts, and the faces staring back at us from seal hunts and shipwrecks are prematurely aged. Objects, on the other hand, survive well in the intense cold, and Amundsen's pipe, mug, comb, typewriter and sewing kit are all beautifully preserved, as is this menu for a special dinner to mark the safe return of Amundsen and his crew from the South Pole in 1912:Polar Soup
Whale with fat oil
Saelhundsblod (Seal Dog Blood)
Pork from Haakon VII Plateau
Pigviner (Penguins)
Polaris mit Hvalrostuender (Polar Ice with Sea-Elephant's Teeth)
And no vegetarian alternative.
