Los Angeles - epicentre of the American Dream.
Michael Palin - Full CircleThe hotel flags are at half mast as we load ourselves onto another bus and head north towards Los Angeles.

The San Diego Freeway is a belt of apparently unrelieved prosperity - evidence of the extraordinary rise and rise of the state of California, a far-flung outpost of the Spanish Empire when the Declaration of Independence was signed, now, with thirty-two million inhabitants, the most populous state of the Union. The long, low gleaming assembly plants of the high-tech industries and the big tinted-glass blocks of insurance and banking corporations flash by, catching the sun. The Californians have embraced 'environmentalism' with enthusiasm. Signs extol ridesharing, car pooling, and cleanliness ('Litter Removal for the Next Two Miles Sponsored by Mitsubishi', 'Wall Adopted by Huntingdon Beach Pentecostal Church').

After three hours we are well into Los Angeles and surrounded by the happy, dappy burble of unfettered commercial enterprise. This is user-friendly California, the land of Drain Surgeons, Topless Driving Lessons and Freefone numbers for Psychics.
