Around the World in 80 Days
Day 69: 2 December
Eddie Murphy has bought Cher's house in L.A. for 6.5 million dollars, and Spielberg's latest hit features 'a bunch of lovable dinosaurs'. Could well have been filmed aboard the California Zephyr.
There is a new man on the PA this morning and mercifully he is very good to listen to. This is because he gets everything slightly wrong. So, in a piece of historical information, Lucy Kilpatrick comes out as 'Lucky' Kilpatrick, and a film as Who's Afraid of The Virgin Wolf?.
At 2.20 in the afternoon we're at the good-looking town of Burlington on the Illinois border. Spires pierce the skyline and bonfire smoke drifts across a graveyard in a wispy autumn breeze. We're about to cross the Mississippi and all seems well with the world, except that we are running ever later. Due in to Chicago at 4.30, with what seemed an easy 6.25 connection to New York, we're now looking at an arrival time nearer 6. Chuck isn't worried. He's going to call ahead and have redcaps and trolleys standing by for us.
