Around the World in 80 Days

Day 67: 30 November

Michael Palin - Around the World in 80 DaysThe control over the dogs is based on co-operation rather than coercion. No whip or rein is used and the instructions are communicated verbally. At the moment there's a lot of 'Siddown!' and not much else as the dogs are forced, much against their instinct, to wait for Passepartout to find a camera position.

Marion asks me how I'm coping with the altitude. 'There's usually some nausea or headaches.'

Funnily enough, until he said that I felt fine.

Then suddenly we're away. Any feelings of guilt at sitting like Queen Victoria in the back of the sled, covered in rugs and furs, whilst small dogs pull me along, are dispelled by the obvious delight the dogs take in being on the move. Marion leaps on and off the sled, running, sliding, leaning out over corners like a cycle speedway rider, and keeping up a running stream of imprecations and exhortations to the dogs.
