Around the World in 80 Days

Day 58: 21 November

Michael Palin - Around the World in 80 DaysThe Filipino ship doesn't sound convinced. She is a much smaller ship heading into a steady succession of depressions. Our captain signs off breezily: 'Have a safe voyage, avoid the lows'.

Investigate the library. It's that sort of day. Nearly all the books are in English, though there isn't an Englishman in the crew. A selection of sea classics - Requiem for a Wren, A Night to Remember, Moby Dick, The Iliad. Can't imagine container ships spawning any literature of their own - In Which We Load, Voyage of The Canned.

There are fat Micheners and Urises and Clavells. Long, thick and international. The container ships of literature. There are games - chess, draughts and Mah Jong - but videos are more popular. This afternoon they're watching Silent Night. Far from being a nice little tale of carol singers it's another load of screams and terror. These gentle people's capacity for watching other people's violence seems almost unlimited.

On the notice board outside there is information about stress and how to combat it, the danger of Aids and an invitation to participate in Vernons Football Pools.
