Around the World in 80 Days
Day 43: 6 November
Reluctantly back to Hong Kong Island after this pleasurable unwinding in a quieter place. The ferry is much busier than when we left this morning. Tourists, many of them German, fight for deck places in the sun. The local Chinese stay inside with the air-conditioning.By the time we land there is no time for a wash and brush-up before the party. So straight to The 1997, a small, smartly furnished club which doubles as an art gallery and trebles as a jazz club. There to meet me is Sam with my suit. Before I can even try it on a photo has to be taken of the two of us together. The fact that I'm hot and a little irritable doesn't seem to matter, and I now understand why the smiles on so many of his celebrity photos look a little cracked. A fashionable young man sits at the bar and, taking him to be the manager, I ask where I might go to try on my new outfit. He indicates a door which turns out to lead to the gents. I am beginning to bitterly regret this whole enterprise when the door to the gents swings open as I'm in mid-change, catches me off balance and sends me spinning, and half de-trousered, into one of the cubicles.
